A usual tradition of organizing Pune round in Hotel Blue diamond was changed to a more suitable location SIBM where all the shooting work can be done decently.
You can expect Pune round to be aired on TV this year!
Prelims started with some easy questions.
The cut off for wild card was 14.

A known figure in Quizzing world "Aniketh Rallabandi"(Singhad Engineering) took a negative on 1st Question asked in wild card and crawled his way back by working out 5th and 6th question.
Finals started with Aniketh moving strength to strength while other teams getting some positive and negative points, not enough to give Aniketh run for his money.
Former champion Arjun (SIMC) was out of sight but his partner had come and qualified straight in Top 4, pressing buzzer occasionally.
A team from IMDR came close enough to challenge Singhad for 1st position but they eventually had to close in on runner up position.

As a Quiz Master said once : “I am not looking for William Wordsworth or William Shakespeare in a quiz, so I will ignore spelling mistake however your answer should be visible & not an optical challenge & readable.

Similarly, I am not a regular reporter or a journalist or writer, rather a  #QuizReporter

So ignore the grammar & the sentence formation, I know you guys are more interested in the story of how we won it & the prelims question right…so just enjoy it…

The Navi mumbai round started with a pretty easy set of questions as the turnout of teams was not more than 50.
There was no wild card around.
Cut off for prelims must be  13 and more.

Finals started with my main opponent taking negative and i getting a free hit on it!
But after 2nd question onwards he buzzed almost every question and got it right.
After 1st round scores were like, I am on 60 and he is on 180.

From 2nd round i started pushing buzzers after reading 1 word i know anything distinctly about and that's when i outscored him.

Evey time when i pressed buzzer either i knew ans or invented one.
Meanwhile my opponent was taking rash shots which brought him to near -150.

Pickbrain took a pun on him by saying "Way to come back in game is Keep Going, which may get you few more minuses!" to which every one chuckled.

My partner took some unwanted negatives to make game interesting.

Before 2 questions to spare it was clear that i am going in Western Zonals.
Thank God there was no last question pressure on me.

The Caravan of the most prestigious Tata Crucible Business Quiz 2015 ,campus edition reached the temple city on Feb.23. This year the stakes are high as this city came to limelight last year when  Omkar Amrutansu won the International Championship of this quiz.The big question whether the defending champion will defend their titles this year also. Bhubaneswar is one of the city which is witnessing one school,college or corporate team in the National Finals of every Buisness or Tech quiz.

This year Crucible choose new venue for this quiz,for the first time it was done in a campus and that of KIIT,one of the leading University of this region.More than 200 teams got registered themselves for this event.Prelims questions were tougher than last time but the teams from Bhubaneswar accepted the challenge and scored high in the prelims.

Wild card Rounds were interesting as the defending champion went on to wildcard ,they outwit others and secured a place for them in finals.

The finals started in  a dramatic style with IIIT team (Satwik &Mrinal) took 75 points.This year the Tata came up with an interesting format as all the questions were on buzzer.After taking 75 ,the IIIT duo took some negatives and negate their score.Then the buzzer buzzed very fast .Then with some stunning answers the defending champion Omkar with his partner Abhinav Dhar started their journey .This time the journey was not too smooth because they scored in spree but then took some negative and  but they managed to gain the lead from the other teams on the stage.

The team from XIMB with seasoned quizzer Kalpit cracked some awesome questions when they are about to pass to the audience.The team from College of Veterinary Science ,Dr.Rashmi(yours truly) with his partner Dr.Sangram played the game cautiously and scored in intervals the duo game some stunning answers and didnt take any negative through out the quiz.

According to the the ace QM Giri Balasubramanium this final is one of the nail bitting finals ever in the BBhubaneswar history of TCQ with last two Qns remaining of the quiz ,Omkar was leading on 225,Rashmi on 185 and not too far from him Satwik on 110.The penultimate qn was of 75 points and Omkar  hit the buzzer and the entire room turned into sience waiting for Giri's response whether the Bhubaneswar Finals was over or not,the defending champion took negative and came down to 155.With one Qn left anyone could have won from that position with the final Qn coming up the defending champion outwit others on buzzer and won the quiz .

Team Rashmi came 2nd.

The nail biting finish witnessed  by the entire audience responded with a huge round of applause.

Started from where we left last year & we did it

The OQA Confluence with the QM

The stage was set for a complete showdown. NIT-R , the defending champs Nishant and Wasim the favorites to win the quiz given their preparation and hard work. VSSUT , the runner up team from last year, Bivash and Sanket looking to make amends. Debashish and Prathamesh all set to test the Ranchi pitch as Debashish returns to biz quizzing after a long break. IIM Ranchi shaping up to drive off the outstation teams and establish native supremacy along with BITS, XISS. The prelims question were a bit on the tougher side for a city like Ranchi but as Giri justified his set stating Ranchi always had good teams and Giri wasn't proved wrong for what a ride the quiz turned out to be. 
The wild card entrants saw the previous years winners and runners up face to face. Nerve testing procedure had already started. The top finishers proved their mettle and answered on the buzzer Oberoi Hotel, Plain Vanilla Quiz up and Western Union Money Transfer patent of Happy Birthday to you to compensate a somewhat shaky performance in the prelims.
The finals started with NITR team of Nishant and Wasim placed at table6 gaining on the first question and then losing all points within a matter of minutes. This trend followed Table6 and at the end of the day played a decisive role in the quiz.
At table 2 IIM Ranchi worked out some good guesses and piled up their scores at the end to 135. Meanwhile at table 4 Debashish Pradhan and team also made a strong contention with some great cracks like identifying Akshaya Patra and connecting Raghuram Rajan to Booth School. 

At one point in the quiz VSSUT had a comfortable lead at 175 but they squandered it with some rash ones on the buzzer.
Coming to rashness Table6 NIT R team of Nishant and Wasim played aggressive and perhaps a bit too aggressively. 
They lost and gained points throughout the quiz and answered more questions than anyone else. Had it not been for the negatives they took they could have finished at a score nearing 400, an unassailable total.
At the last question IIM Ranchi were perched the top of the leader board and were closely tailed by Table6, Nishant and Wasim. Followed by Table 4 with Debashish and then Vssut at 4th rank.
The last question appeared on the screen and Table 6 pounced on their chance,everyone waited to congratulate them again for their bumpy win with bated breath. The wait indicated something was wrong and the look on Table6 was of despair. Finally Giri killed the first chance n awarded them a negative 75 which was the value of the question.
No sooner than the negative was awarded that Vssut pressed the buzzer and all the focus shifted on to the team which had already been written off. With a plus 60( on a second chance on buzzer the value of a question decreases to a prefixed value in the current format) the tally of Vssut would have reached from 65 to 125 which would have been still short of IIM Ranchi's cozy score of 135. As Bivash started the answer, Giri went to the stage to add on to the drama of the moment and then Sanket did a quick math to figure out they are not going to clinch the title and reminded his partner of the power play which increases the value of a 75 point question to a 85 pointer. 65+85=150 and that's what they finished on. 

Answering the last question on the second chance VSSUT dislodged IIM from the top spot and for the first time in the decade old history of TATA CRUCIBLE carried the laurels from the homeland of Birsa Munda to the homeland of Veer Surendra Sai.

on a day when my friend Ravi Hnda wrote a brilliant piece of article on "How to prepare for Business Quizzes?"( , actually I was awiting for the results of Ranchi crucibles.

Ravi! All these guys who love Quizzing passionately were fighting among themselves for the podium finish..and each one of them are national champ quizzards in the making....

So last time Runner up team this time turned around their performance and emerged as the champions at Ranchi edition of TATA Crucible Quiz(Campus).

IIM-Ranchi could just be satisfied with being the Runner's up.

There were 3 teams which had some familiar champ quizzards of Odisha Quiz Association making it to the finals.

The classical Debashish Pradhan returned after a hiatus of 2 years & just was at 3rd position as reports say from the audience.

However, the last year champions started with some quick, fast crack answers & were marching towards making it again a repeat however probably the lady luck was not with Nishant Nihar & Wasim Sajjad today.

Never mind, the best team wins the battle.

I am sure again while watching this edition in CNBC TV, it will again feel like, as if a weekly session of Odisha Quiz Association is in progress & all these known bunch are fighting against themselves.

The same was the situation in Crucible Bhubaneswar as well where most of the OQA regulars were there in the finals.

It will be very interesting if the two OQA teams who are winners at Bhubaneswar & Ranchi both made it to the national finals of Crucible this year representing East Zone, trust me that would be the icing on the cake...

How to get started with Business Quizzing? A must Read for all Quizzards across India

How to get started with Business Quizzing?

If you want to get started with Business Quizzing because you want to win Tata Crucible – don’t.

If you want to get started with Business Quizzing because it will be a good point on your resume – don’t.

If you want to get started with Business Quizzing  because it seems like a cool thing to be involved with – DON’T.  To be honest, it isn’t cool. It is a little nerdy. I am not saying it is a bad thing – all I am saying is don’t have unrealistic expectations. Yes, if you persist with it – you will win a few quizzes, you will get more than a few bullet points on the resume, and a very specific niche of people will consider you cool. But it is not going to happen if you start with those things in mind. For any of these to materialize, you need to go to the basics. You need to really enjoy a piece of information and trivia however useless it might be.

It should give you a certain amount of kick (Salmanwala….) knowing that the founder of Victoria Secret committed suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate bridge.  You should find this interesting even if you are not Mark Zuckerberg and even if it is not Sean Parker giving you this information. This hunger for knowledge and this passion for trivia is something which will make you a good quizzer.

Having said that, here are a few realistic pointers to get you started:

1 – Start reading. Read as much as you can. Read books, magazine, novels, websites – read anything that you can lay your hands on.

2 – Devour lists. Go through all the business related lists that you can lay your hands on. Be it the Fortune 500 or the Forbes Billionaire lists or most respect brands in India. The point is that these lists are not the end goals, but starting points. Pick names from the list and read about them. If they are important enough to be featured in one of these lists, you should know about them.

3 – Attend quizzes. It doesn’t matter if the quiz has any prize money or not. It doesn’t matter if you have ever heard of the quizmaster or not. It doesn’t matter if it is two random students who have made the quiz. It doesn’t matter even if the quiz is boring and shitty. The amount of learning that you will have from a quiz cannot be replicated elsewhere. There cannot be a better use of your time to improve your quizzing skills than to attend an actual quiz. If you live in a place which has a quiz club, join it. If you live in a place that doesn’t have one, get couple more like minded people together and start one.

Do note that these are all starting points. This is a marathon that you are getting into and not a sprint. Hope I will meet you somewhere along the way.
